When in person appointments may not be possible, virtual/telehealth appointments provide a fantastic alternative from the comfort of your home! During virtual appointments: we take detailed history and perform functional mobility and movement testing; provide guidance and reassurance; promote independence through education and empowerment; guide you through exercises to aid your recovery; provide you with individualized home exercise programs, and create a plan together.

Exercise Prescription

EXERCISE THERAPY

The bread and butter of physiotherapy treatment is promoting movement and active rehabilitation. Through exercise prescription, we may try to improve joint range of motion, strength, muscle length, balance or modulate pain. Personalized exercises can target muscles in isolation or globally, and can be progressed or regressed based on individual needs.

Medical acupuncture is based on traditional Chinese acupuncture techniques developed over thousands of years. It is an effective treatment modality that involves inserting thin sterile needles into specific points along the meridians (energy lines) of the body. It is used to modulate and temporarily alleviate pain arising from various musculoskeletal conditions, such as tension headaches, shoulder pain, acute and chronic low back pain and osteoarthritis.

Dry needling

DRY NEEDLING

Dry needling is a type of acupuncture which involves the insertion of a thin sterile needle into a tight/painful muscle with the goal of relaxing the tissue. These painful areas contain a trigger point, which is a tight band that can be painful to touch, and create local or referred pain to other areas. During needling, a local twitch response is induced, followed by the removal of the needle. This technique can be effective for neuromusculoskeletal pain and movement impairments when paired in conjunction with other aspects of physiotherapy.

Manual Therapy

MANUAL THERAPY

Manual therapy is a wide selection of hands-on techniques used to mobilize or manipulate joints, muscles, nerves and connective tissue. Hands-on therapy is an effective way of modulating pain, reducing muscle tone, increasing blood flow, and can help to improve mobility and function. It is typically used in conjunction with exercises to help maintain the improvements, which can further facilitate recovery.

Load Management

LOAD MANAGEMENT

Appropriate load management is necessary to prevent overtraining and injuries. It is needed to manage recovery and return to sport following an injury. Every tissue in the body has a certain capacity to tolerate load. The aim of rehabilitation is managing this while increasing capacity. Our job as physiotherapists is 1) find an ideal starting point for exercises based on current signs and symptoms, 2) help to identify all possible internal, external loads affecting the healing process, 3) progress/regress load accordingly.

Myofacial Release

MYOFASCIAL RELEASE

Myofascial release or soft tissue release aims to target the muscle and fascial system to decrease tension, reduce pain, and improve local blood flow in the region. It is a highly effective hands-on treatment technique combining myofascial release, therapeutic massage and active assisted stretching. In conjunction with exercises, it can help to improve flexibility in the muscles and the body’s connective tissue.

Heading into surgery, it is important to be as strong and mobile as possible in order to start from a higher baseline post surgery. We can help you achieve your pre and post-surgical goals by working together to create a rehabilitation plan. This includes an individualized home exercise program to improve pain, strength, flexibility and functional deficits. In addition, manual therapy and other pain modulating interventions can be used. Joint replacements, shoulder, knee, wrist and spine surgeries are among the most common surgical interventions we treat.

Taping

TAPING

Whether it's athletic tape, KT tape or Leukotape, the goal is the same: facilitate normal movement by temporarily offloading structures and modifying nervous system input. It is meant to be a short term pain relief, and it acts like a "walking hug" (Copyright Greg Lehman). Taping can also temporary improve proprioception, which is the sensory information coming from your muscles letting your brain know where your body parts are positioned.
